2 PART CARTOONING WORKSHOP

Join award-winning cartoonist and storyteller Mike Kunkel (creator of Herobear and the Kid) for a special two-day, in-person cartooning workshop!

Whether you're just getting started or have years of drawing behind you, this workshop is built to inspire and encourage artists at any level. Over two days, you'll immerse in a hands-on, creatively charged weekend as Mike guides you through the nuts and bolts of print cartooning—everything from sketching expressive characters and writing cartoon gags to laying out panels and telling stories that land and connect. The workshop will explore the heart of cartoon storytelling, character creation, and the power of drawing from your own voice.

Mike will share his personal process—from sketchbook to storytelling—and offer a rare behind-the-scenes look at his journey as both an animator and independent cartoonist. You'll explore how to bring your own ideas to life on the page, with plenty of drawing time, group feedback, and one-on-one moments to help push your work further.

By the end, you'll walk away with finished cartoons, new tools in your creative toolkit, and fresh momentum to inspire you for your own projects.

Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their work at CTNX 2025 and connect with the vibrant and welcoming Kunkel Community in person. It’s a chance to share your voice, grow your network, and be part of something meaningful..

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR MIKE KUNKEL

Cartoonist, Storyboard Artist, Director

With nearly 30-years of experience in Cartooning, Mike Kunkel has

continued to do what he loves ... create and tell cartoon stories for audiences. By working on numerous Television and Film projects as a TV and FILM Director, Story and Development Artist, Character Designer, Screenwriter and Animator, Mike has been a cartoonist for such studios as Warner Bros, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Sony Entertainment, Universal Pictures, DreamWorks and Walt Disney Studios.

As a Published Writer and Artist, Mike has been nominated four times for the prestigious EISNER AWARD and four IGNATZ AWARDS and is the creator of the two-time EISNER Award-winning comic book series "Herobear and the kid." He has also helped to relaunch the SHAZAM franchise for DC comics as an all-ages comic series.

As a Designer he has lent his skills to animated TV shows and Features. Along with development for toys, games, and brand development. His Designs in television have also won the ANNIE AWARD for “Best Character Design in an Animated Television Production. “ Through illustration and print production, Mike has lent his skills to multiple print media projects such as Comics and Children’s Books.

He’s created prints and original art pieces for varied creative outlets and art clients. He lives in Southern California where he spends most of his extra time trying to learn new magic tricks and playing games with his family. He’s never been early for a deadline.
